I just wanted a calmer life, better balance, and maybe fewer mass shootings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">But after nearly three years of actually living here, I started wondering: <span class=\"s1\"><b>Was this just my personal experience, or does the data back it up?<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So I started digging. And it turns out\u2026 the Netherlands doesn\u2019t just <i>feel<\/i> better in a lot of ways\u2014it actually <i>ranks<\/i> better in a lot of ways. The Netherlands has accessibility. I haven\u2019t paid $700 for an ER visit here. That alone feels revolutionary.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Work-Life Balance<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Index:<\/b><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/statistics\/how-s-life-23089679.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OECD Better Life Index<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>What it measures:<\/b><\/span> Average hours worked, paid leave, personal time, work stress<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1: Ranks <span class=\"s1\"><b>#1<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8: Ranks in the <span class=\"s1\"><b>bottom tier<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>My take:<\/b><\/span> Americans don\u2019t have a work ethic problem\u2014we have a <i>rest ethic<\/i> problem. The Dutch get their work done and then they go live their lives. It\u2019s not laziness. It\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Safety & Gun Violence<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Index:<\/b><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionofhumanity.org\/maps\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Peace Index<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>What it measures:<\/b><\/span> Homicide rate, violent crime, political stability, weapons per capita<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#16<\/b><\/span> (Global Peace Index 2023)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#131<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>My take:<\/b><\/span> No place is crime-free, but walking home at midnight here feels very different than walking home at midnight in most U.S. cities. And the absence of mass shootings? Hard not to notice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Corruption & Trust in Institutions<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Index:<\/b><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/en\/cpi\/2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transparency International \u2013 Corruption Perceptions Index (2024)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>What it measures:<\/b><\/span> Perceived corruption in government and public services<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\">\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#5<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#26<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>My take:<\/b><\/span> Dutch bureaucracy is annoying sometimes, but it\u2019s rarely corrupt. When I deal with government here, I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m being tricked. That\u2019s\u2026 new.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Transportation & Infrastructure<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Measured by:<\/b><\/span> Public transit quality, cycling infrastructure, road maintenance, environmental impact<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1: Trains, trams, and <span class=\"s1\"><b>world-class bike networks<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8: Car-dependent systems, aging infrastructure<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>My take:<\/b><\/span> I haven\u2019t driven in a year, and I don\u2019t miss it. The U.S. builds for vehicles. The Netherlands builds for <i>people.<\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Environmental Performance<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>Index:<\/b><\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/epi.yale.edu\/measure\/2024\/EPI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yale Environmental Performance Index (2024)<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\"><b>What it measures:<\/b><\/span> Air quality, water safety, sustainability, climate action<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\">\ud83c\uddf3\ud83c\uddf1: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#11<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">\ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8: Ranked <span class=\"s1\"><b>#38<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>My take:<\/b><\/span> The Netherlands isn\u2019t perfect (it\u2019s still dealing with nitrogen issues), but it\u2019s miles ahead of the U.S. in climate awareness, bike-first infrastructure, and environmental planning. You <i>feel<\/i> it every time you walk or ride through a city here.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p5\"><b>\ud83d\udd39 Cost of Living vs Value of Life<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>No single index\u2014this is lived experience<\/b><b><\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Taxes are higher here. Groceries might be more. Rent is a challenge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>But<\/b><\/span>: Healthcare is affordable. Public transport saves thousands. No car = no gas, insurance, parking. And life just <i>feels<\/i> less financially punishing. You get more for what you pay.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>\ud83d\udfe9 Final Score?<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Depends on what you value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">But for me?
