{"id":2452,"date":"2025-03-29T18:00:56","date_gmt":"2025-03-29T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anorthernsoul.co\/?p=2452"},"modified":"2025-03-29T09:56:14","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T08:56:14","slug":"dutch-politics-explained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anorthernsoul.co\/?p=2452","title":{"rendered":"No Two-Party Drama Here: A Look at Dutch Politics from an American Expat"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"no-two-party-drama-here-a-look-at-dutch-politics-from-an-american-expat\" data-start=\"190\" data-end=\"396\">No Two-Party Drama Here: A Look at Dutch Politics from an American Expat<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"190\" data-end=\"396\">When I first started trying to understand Dutch politics, I thought: <em data-start=\"259\" data-end=\"293\">Sure, how complicated can it be?<\/em> There\u2019s a king, a prime minister, some kind of parliament\u2014it can\u2019t be worse than U.S. politics, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"441\">Then I looked into how elections work here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"443\" data-end=\"871\">There are <em data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"461\">dozens<\/em> of political parties. Some with names like \u201cParty for the Animals\u201d and \u201c50PLUS.\u201d I haven\u2019t seen a ballot myself (as a non-citizen, I can\u2019t vote in national elections), but just reading about it felt like ordering off a very ideologically diverse menu. Still, the more I learned, the more I realized: this system makes a weird kind of sense. And in some ways, it might just work better than what I left behind.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1564\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"the-dutch-political-system-in-a-nutshell\" class=\"\" data-start=\"1566\" data-end=\"1614\"><strong data-start=\"1570\" data-end=\"1614\">The Dutch Political System in a Nutshell<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1616\" data-end=\"1948\">The Netherlands is a <strong data-start=\"1637\" data-end=\"1695\">constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy<\/strong>. That means they have a king (King Willem-Alexander, if you\u2019re curious), and while he\u2019s definitely not without responsibility, he mostly waves at people and signs things ceremonially. The real political power lies in the hands of parliament\u2014specifically the <strong data-start=\"1904\" data-end=\"1947\">House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"2194\">There are <strong data-start=\"1960\" data-end=\"1973\">150 seats<\/strong> in the Tweede Kamer. And they are filled <em data-start=\"2015\" data-end=\"2031\">proportionally<\/em>\u2014meaning if a party wins 10% of the national vote, they get 10% of the seats. No weird electoral college math. No gerrymandering. Just straight-up math. (Imagine!)<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2196\" data-end=\"2199\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"no-two-party-system-here\" class=\"\" data-start=\"2226\" data-end=\"2258\"><strong data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2258\">No Two-Party System Here<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2476\">This proportional system means that <strong data-start=\"2296\" data-end=\"2312\">many parties<\/strong> can\u2014and do\u2014win seats in parliament. It\u2019s normal for <strong data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2385\">10 to 15 parties<\/strong> to be represented at once. This forces cooperation, compromise, and coalition governments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2676\">No single party has held a majority in over a century. So, after every election, parties negotiate coalitions to form a government. It\u2019s like political speed dating followed by a long group project.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2951\" data-end=\"2954\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"a-very-quick-guide-to-dutch-political-parties\" class=\"\" data-start=\"2956\" data-end=\"3011\"><strong data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"3011\">A (Very) Quick Guide to Dutch Political Parties<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3013\" data-end=\"3109\">Here\u2019s a quick tour of some of the bigger players, from left to right on the political spectrum:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"4280\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3248\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3248\"><strong data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3151\">GroenLinks\u2013PvdA (GreenLeft\u2013Labour)<\/strong> \u2013 Progressive, left-wing, pro-environment, pro-EU. Recently merged to strengthen their position.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3249\" data-end=\"3335\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3251\" data-end=\"3335\"><strong data-start=\"3251\" data-end=\"3273\">D66 (Democrats 66)<\/strong> \u2013 Social-liberal, pro-education, pro-EU, big on civil rights.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3336\" data-end=\"3424\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3338\" data-end=\"3424\"><strong data-start=\"3338\" data-end=\"3346\">Volt<\/strong> \u2013 A pan-European party. Young, idealistic, and pro-integration within the EU.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3425\" data-end=\"3529\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3529\"><strong data-start=\"3427\" data-end=\"3464\">CDA (Christian Democratic Appeal)<\/strong> \u2013 Center-right, Christian democratic, traditional but pragmatic.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3530\" data-end=\"3649\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3649\"><strong data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3582\">VVD (People\u2019s Party for Freedom and Democracy)<\/strong> \u2013 Liberal-conservative, pro-business, led for years by Mark Rutte.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3650\" data-end=\"3753\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3753\"><strong data-start=\"3652\" data-end=\"3681\">NSC (New Social Contract)<\/strong> \u2013 A new centrist party focused on transparency and trust in government.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3754\" data-end=\"3885\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3885\"><strong data-start=\"3756\" data-end=\"3789\">BBB (Farmer-Citizen Movement)<\/strong> \u2013 Agrarian populist party that exploded in popularity recently, especially outside urban areas.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3886\" data-end=\"3981\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3981\"><strong data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3915\">PVV (Party for Freedom)<\/strong> \u2013 Right-wing populist and anti-immigration, led by Geert Wilders.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3982\" data-end=\"4091\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3984\" data-end=\"4091\"><strong data-start=\"3984\" data-end=\"4020\">JA21 & FvD (Forum for Democracy)<\/strong> \u2013 Hard-right to far-right, with nationalist and Euroskeptic positions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4092\" data-end=\"4211\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4094\" data-end=\"4211\"><strong data-start=\"4094\" data-end=\"4143\">Partij voor de Dieren (Party for the Animals)<\/strong> \u2013 Yes, they\u2019re serious. Environmentalist and animal rights focused.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4212\" data-end=\"4280\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4214\" data-end=\"4280\"><strong data-start=\"4214\" data-end=\"4224\">50PLUS<\/strong> \u2013 A party dedicated to the interests of older citizens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4282\" data-end=\"4541\">There\u2019s also <strong data-start=\"4295\" data-end=\"4303\">BIJ1<\/strong>, a left-wing party focused on anti-racism and intersectionality, and <strong data-start=\"4373\" data-end=\"4380\">SGP<\/strong>, a deeply conservative Calvinist party that still believes women shouldn\u2019t run for office (yet holds a seat in parliament because democracy is weird like that).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4543\" data-end=\"4546\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"how-it-compares-to-u-s-politics\" class=\"\" data-start=\"4548\" data-end=\"4588\"><strong data-start=\"4552\" data-end=\"4588\">How It Compares to U.S. Politics<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4590\" data-end=\"4615\">Oh boy. Where do I start?<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4617\" data-end=\"5450\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4617\" data-end=\"4859\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4619\" data-end=\"4859\"><strong data-start=\"4619\" data-end=\"4650\">More parties = more nuance.<\/strong> In the U.S., we tend to lump everything into Team Red or Team Blue. Here, you can find a party that reflects your views <em data-start=\"4771\" data-end=\"4777\">much<\/em> more specifically. That means more voices in parliament\u2014but also more compromise.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4861\" data-end=\"5060\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4863\" data-end=\"5060\"><strong data-start=\"4863\" data-end=\"4891\">Coalitions are the norm.<\/strong> No one \u201cwins\u201d outright. Governments are built by negotiation, and often include parties that don\u2019t fully agree. It\u2019s messy, but it can result in more balanced policies.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5062\" data-end=\"5247\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5247\"><strong data-start=\"5064\" data-end=\"5097\">Politics feels\u2026 less angry.<\/strong> Not always, of course\u2014Wilders\u2019 rhetoric is intense\u2014but overall, political discourse is less tribal, and media is less obsessed with constant outrage.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5249\" data-end=\"5450\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5251\" data-end=\"5450\"><strong data-start=\"5251\" data-end=\"5279\">Voter turnout is higher.<\/strong> Not astronomically, but higher. And elections are <em data-start=\"5330\" data-end=\"5336\">much<\/em> less influenced by money. Campaigns are short, publicly funded, and no one\u2019s airing attack ads for months on end.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"5452\" data-end=\"5455\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"the-netherlands-in-the-eu\" class=\"\" data-start=\"5457\" data-end=\"5490\"><strong data-start=\"5461\" data-end=\"5490\">The Netherlands in the EU<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5492\" data-end=\"5768\">The Netherlands is one of the EU\u2019s founding members and a vocal supporter of European integration. Most major parties (except the hard-right) are pro-EU, and Dutch politics regularly intersect with broader EU debates\u2014on agriculture, migration, climate policy, and the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5770\" data-end=\"5979\">The Dutch approach to the EU is often practical: they want efficiency, fairness, and shared values\u2014but they\u2019re not afraid to speak up when they disagree (especially when it comes to budget rules or subsidies).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"5981\" data-end=\"5984\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"so-whos-in-charge-right-now\" class=\"\" data-start=\"4274\" data-end=\"4312\"><strong data-start=\"4278\" data-end=\"4312\">So\u2026 Who\u2019s in Charge Right Now?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4314\" data-end=\"4606\">As of <strong data-start=\"4320\" data-end=\"4336\">July 2, 2024<\/strong>, the Netherlands has a new coalition government, known as the <strong data-start=\"4399\" data-end=\"4417\">Schoof cabinet<\/strong>. This coalition comprises the <strong data-start=\"4448\" data-end=\"4475\">Party for Freedom (PVV)<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"4481\" data-end=\"4531\">People\u2019s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4533\" data-end=\"4562\">New Social Contract (NSC)<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"4572\" data-end=\"4605\">Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4608\" data-end=\"4823\">The government is led by <strong data-start=\"4633\" data-end=\"4663\">Prime Minister Dick Schoof<\/strong>, an independent politician and former civil servant. It\u2019s the first time since 1918 that an independent has held the role of Prime Minister in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4825\" data-end=\"5099\">This coalition came together following the <strong data-start=\"4868\" data-end=\"4893\">2023 general election<\/strong>, where the PVV, led by Geert Wilders, secured the most seats. I\u2019m not constantly bracing for the next media firestorm. And no one here cares if I stand for a flag or say the right prayer before a school board meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6864\" data-end=\"6944\">Politics still matters. Passionately. But it\u2019s not performative in the same way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6946\" data-end=\"7126\">Living in the Netherlands reminds me that there are other ways to do democracy\u2014ways that are slower, more collaborative, and sometimes\u2026 a little boring. And boring is underrated.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"7128\" data-end=\"7131\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"conclusion-more-voices-less-noise\" class=\"\" data-start=\"7133\" data-end=\"7176\"><strong data-start=\"7137\" data-end=\"7176\">Conclusion: More Voices, Less Noise<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7178\" data-end=\"7431\">Dutch politics isn\u2019t perfect\u2014no system is\u2014but it\u2019s built on a foundation of inclusion, negotiation, and realism. There\u2019s room at the table for more than two teams. And while that can make things complicated, it also reflects the complexity of real life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7433\" data-end=\"7551\">So no, there\u2019s no two-party drama here.
