So when I say I miss the mountains, I mean it in my bones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"1094\">And yet now, I live in the Netherlands\u2014a land where the horizon goes on forever, and where elevation is more suggestion than fact. It\u2019s beautiful here in its own way. Serene. Gentle. Great for bouldering and people-watching alike.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1742\" data-end=\"1885\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1885\"><strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1784\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deklimmuur.nl\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1782\">Klimmuur<\/a><\/strong> (Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague): For those into rope climbing, with decent heights and good variety.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"2070\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"2070\"><strong data-start=\"1888\" data-end=\"1940\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mountain-network.nl\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1890\" data-end=\"1938\">Mountain Network<\/a><\/strong> (Arnhem, Nieuwegein, more): Offers rope climbing and even alpine training\u2014handy if you\u2019re planning a trip back to real mountains.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2201\">Even if it\u2019s not your usual scene, it\u2019s worth stepping into the vertical energy now and then. Just to remember the feel of reach.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2203\" data-end=\"2206\" \/>\n<h2 id=\"find-the-hills-yes-they-exist\" class=\"\" data-start=\"2208\" data-end=\"2243\">Find the Hills (Yes, They Exist)<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2395\">You won\u2019t gain serious altitude here, but that doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t places that lift you\u2014gently, persistently\u2014into wider views and deeper breath.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"3143\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2397\" data-end=\"2659\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2659\"><strong data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2477\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.np-utrechtseheuvelrug.nl\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2401\" data-end=\"2475\">Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park<\/a><\/strong>: Wooded ridges, peaceful trails, and a handful of lookouts. The Amerongse Berg (69 meters!) won\u2019t impress your friends from Colorado, but it might surprise you with its quiet charm.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2661\" data-end=\"2896\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2896\"><strong data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2716\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitzuidlimburg.nl\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2714\">South Limburg<\/a><\/strong>: The closest thing the Netherlands has to alpine terrain. You feel different.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4846\" data-end=\"4894\">In flat places, the climbs are small but sacred.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4896\" data-end=\"4899\" \/>\n<h2 id=\"closing-the-hikers-heart\" class=\"\" data-start=\"4901\" data-end=\"4930\">Closing: The Hiker\u2019s Heart<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"5167\">Living without mountains has taught me something I didn\u2019t expect\u2014that elevation is a state of mind as much as a geography. That what I miss about hiking\u2014the solitude, the rhythm, the clarity\u2014can be found in other ways, in other places.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5169\" data-end=\"5207\">But still, I miss them. I always will.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5209\" data-end=\"5434\">So I chase little rises and borrow vistas and plan escapes when I can. I walk dunes like they\u2019re ridgelines. I climb stairs like they matter.
