Dark Light

Leaving the serene landscapes of Sandpoint, Idaho, for the vibrant urban tapestry of The Hague, Netherlands, has been a remarkable transition. In Sandpoint, life was defined by its tranquil lakes, lush forests, and a close-knit community, where every face was familiar and the pace of life was gentle. Moving to The Hague, I found myself immersed in a bustling, cosmopolitan city, rich in history and culture, with a dynamic blend of international influences. The brick-paved streets, historic architecture, and busy markets of The Hague offered a stark contrast to the natural beauty of Idaho. Adapting to this new environment has been both challenging and exhilarating, as I navigate the nuances of the Dutch lifestyle, embrace a more diverse and multicultural experience, and build my travel blog to capture the essence of this incredible journey.

One thing that immediately stood out to me was the emphasis on work-life balance. The Dutch prioritize their personal time and leisure activities over the relentless pursuit of career advancement. This mindset shows in the shorter workweeks, generous vacation days, and the overall relaxed atmosphere. It’s common to see people leaving the office at a reasonable hour to enjoy their evenings and weekends without the constant pressure of work.

Another notable difference is the focus on health and well-being. The Dutch love for cycling, not just as a mode of transportation but as a lifestyle choice, is truly inspiring. The extensive network of bike paths and the prevalence of cyclists on the streets create a sense of community and promote an active lifestyle. Additionally, the Dutch affinity for outdoor activities, such as visiting parks and beaches, encourages a connection with nature and an appreciation for the simple pleasures in life.

Speaking of simple pleasures, I’ve fallen in love with the Finnish ritual of the “löyly” (a sauna experience) and the beach culture. Living in The Hague, just a stone’s throw away from the North Sea, has allowed me to indulge in these pastimes regularly. The sauna ritual, with its emphasis on relaxation and rejuvenation, has become a cherished part of my daily routine, while the proximity to the beach has opened up a whole new world of leisure activities that I never had the opportunity to explore back in the US.

Beyond the physical aspects, I’ve also come to appreciate the Dutch directness in communication. While it may seem blunt at first, this straightforward approach fosters honesty and transparency in relationships, both personal and professional. It’s a refreshing change from the often convoluted and indirect communication styles I was used to in the US.

As I reflect on my journey in the Netherlands, I can’t help but feel a sense of personal growth and a shift in perspective. While my initial motivation for moving was to escape the confines of my previous career, I’ve discovered a deeper appreciation for cultivating meaningful relationships and embracing new cultural experiences. The Dutch way of life has taught me to slow down, prioritize my well-being, and find joy in the simple things.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue exploring the Netherlands and potentially combining my newfound interests in people and relationships with a career path that aligns with these values. The Netherlands has truly become a place I can call home, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to embrace this unique and enriching lifestyle.
